How different was the process of working on a solo album with the incredible Brendan O'Brien as opposed to your first solo album with equally fantastic Dave Fridmann.

Dear Brandon, I have an album of songs that come from a shamanic place and am looking for collaborators, feedback and guidance. They are part of my larger project The Voice of Nature on the Breeze of Time, the first phase of which has been from Treevibes and the next (current) phase from Seavibes. Would you consider giving me a short meeting to discuss? Of all your many talents, I am interested in your digeridoo and hand drum prowess and approach to creative process. In addition, I see from your new album cover and title that we are both "hearing" (as are many) the oceans calling and also inspiring more than ever to help the world and it's populace. It is time for a multi-generational rock festival to raise awareness, money, vibration and much more. I plan to take this from a longstanding idea to reality whose time has come and would very much appreciate adding this to our conversation if you are willing -- again, because of what you are tapped into and your experience. I submitted an entry for the Renman contest earlier this year (at 2:50 am ET) and they were not able to access the material for some reason. So, I could give you some samples of my writing if that would help you decide if you would like to engage in these conversations. Meanwhile, thank you for all you do. Peace, Laura Kramer

Hey Brandon, over the past few years you’ve been playing a little more percussion instruments with incubus, even guitar on a few songs. Do you plan on expanding your music universe by adding some more instruments on your live shows? Another question: Do you plan on touring with SOS? Cheers from Perú.

I've had meetings with managers, A&R, and Label Reps who say they love my sound, but when it comes time to do something with it, they want to change it drastically. How do you stay true to yourself even if it doesn't fall in to the current trends?

  • misscluhriss 6/28/2013
    12:15pm

I struggle with sharing a lot of my poetry/songs. From my experience in taking writing workshops I have found the beauty of drafts and feedback of what others perspectives are of my work. However the moment that my pieces leave my hands to someone elses' eyes I am no longer the 'holder of meaning' with that said, from an artist perspective regardless of medium how much of what you create including the emotion, feeling, or experience linked to that art piece(s) do you feel is sometimes lost in translation or misunderstood for lack of a better way to describe the loss of authority to the arts meaning/story once it leaves your hands. Thanks Clarissa

Hi Brandon! First off I would like to introduce myself saying that I’m a big fan of you! For this reason, my question is very important for me… Just to know you better as an artist and as a person. Why are you so obsessed with eyes within triangles? What do they represent for you? A lot of people think you are involved into freemasonry, but I don’t think so! A good person like you could not be involved in things like that! You are against contamination, air pollution; you are for the free water, clean sea… All good things! Why don’t you explain this to us fans once and for all? Greetings from Sardinia Andrea

Hey Brandon! I'm a huge fan! You're one of my main inspirations as a song writer. I was wondering if, since you had new music out, you had any plans to tour with some of your solo stuff or if you would have any interest teaching some master classes on how you go through your different artistic processes and create new projects and over come obstacles for yourself? Thank you for your time:)

My hubs has been with his band for 16 years, has been touring successfully and has sold a great deal of records pretty much on their own. Over this time they have had managers do jack shit for them, okay maybe a tiny bit, but they (he) has done the majority of the work business wise. As they are working on their 8th album w/o management (here is the question) Do they search for management again or continue to bust ass on their own to catch a break?

You have said that your new music is more "accessible." Did you create it in the hopes of gaining a wider audience and new fans, or is that just the opinion you had of it when it was finished? Do you create music more for your own satisfaction or for the satisfaction of others? I'm sure it's both, but can you say which is the greater driving force?

Hi Brandon!! Just a few questions :) What is your favorite song to perform live, and how/why has that changed over time? Similarly, what is the most difficult song to perform live, either for technical or more abstract reasons? In tangible terms, what is happiness for you at this point in your life? Has that idea changed over time as well? Your art and music has inspired me in more ways than you can possibly know, and I am so grateful for that. Much love to you Brandon :)

  • DEBBIE WALLACE 6/25/2013

Brandon, will you tour with Son's of the Sea Compass? If so, would you consider a DVD of your live show for those of us who want to feel the experience, but are logistically in the wrong place?

    8:08pm

Hey Brandon, first of all, thanks for continuing to be an inspiration through reinvention and expansion! Congrats with the release of your new EP and looking forward to the new book as well. My question is in regards to recording. What setting do you feel is optimal for getting the purest recording results as a band? Do you record altogether, then lay vocals over, or piecemeal each part separately? Do you prefer studio or a house type setting for recordimg? Does your solo work recording process allow you to experiment with sound in a way that has influenced the band as well? Ok, so it's many questions! Namaste.

I was listening to your new EP for quite a while today, and it felt like listening to a very much loved familiar voice performing somebody else´s music with very nice lyrics. Although I was way heart broken that I couldn't use my tickets to your Chula performance with Incubus on last year's Honda tour, I really think the small cozy performances are to die for...sensual... and I know you know what I mean. Hi Brandon! I've been enjoying your new EP for the past 4-or-so hours. I wanted to know why you decided to name this side project Sons of the Sea instead of keeping your name. What inspired that title, Sons of the Sea?

  • brebre 6/25/2013

Hey Brandon, I really appreciate your quirky intelligence and how it radiates through your lyrics. What inspires you to write those lyrics? You inspire me. Just a comment of appreciation. Now onto the real deal. First, will you make my babies? You are just beautiful. You will? K. Great. Thanks. Secondly-well this isn't a question but more of an urgent suggestion-please go on another tour soon! I've been living under a rock and just discovered you at age 21. Thirdly, what is your favorite song? So far, though I have not listened to all your albums, "Just a Phase" has been an addiction of mine. It's been on repeat on my Iphone for months now. Ok, this is too long. Sorry. Love ya!

  • Natalie Lopez 6/24/2013

One more question Brandon, and this is for you as well Ren as it's about the promo for the full album and book in the fall, has any thought been given to perhaps recreating or making copies in some way of the stunningly creative and beautiful tarot cards you handwrote for "Where All The Songs Come From"? They have been much discussed and are very well loved and lusted after and I know of many who would love to see something as part of a bundle or even sold as a separate art piece. I, of course, would love the original deck ;) Just a thought! L&L

I was discussing the songs and videos you've released so far off of Compass, with a wonderful friend I met through Incubus and we were curious, the songs on this EP flow so well together and tell their own little beautiful story, who's idea was it to take these specific 4 from the album for the EP? Which then led me to wonder, who's idea was it for an early digital EP and leading from that, how much do you let your manager, the amazing Renman, or your lovely art manager, Jen, figure into that selection process? Is it a matter of "Here guys, this is everything I created and want to put out there, now put it out there." or is it more "This is what I created, this is how I'd like to put it out, either step-by-step or rough outline, so who do we call?" Also, thank you for all the life changing lyrics, music, and art that you've created both solo and with Incubus. You've brought a lot of love and light into my life and so many others, I wish nothing but the same for you Brandon. ♥

Hey Brandon, A few weeks from now, it will be two years since the release of If Not Now, When. Two years later, looking back on that record, what can you remark about the album now as a whole, as compared to your feelings when first making the record and releasing it? Listening to the record now, I still hear the atmospheric, spacious, and lush approach taken by the band in creating it. There are so many layers on that album that go unnoticed unless listeners really challenge themselves to listen for them. It was not a very accessible album right off the bat, which is precisely what I wanted out of an Incubus album. I get a similar sense listening to the Sons Of The Sea EP, which has me very excited to listen to the rest of the songs you worked on with Brendan O'Brien for the new project. Kind regards, Chris Torres

Brandon, for the love of God/Creator/ (whatever you want to call it), will you please reveal to us the lyrics from the second line in the chorus of Pistola?? Your fans from other countries have a hard time understanding lyrics in general because of the language barrier, and even those of us native to the English language are frustrated by the fact that the liner notes say “insert your lyric here”. We had fun coming up with weird ideas during #Incufest (like Black Ollie appear up here), but enough is enough. PLEASE we beg you to stop torturing us! ;) Love and Light from Ohio, ~Amanda Rae

Brandon, where do all the songs come from? You have a very apparent ability to spawn a plethora of meaningful songs/lyrics. I'm wondering have you ever entertained the thought of someday writing music for other artists?

Brandon, I feel that you are a very humble man. I want to know if you realize how much of a positive affect you and your craft/art, has on your listeners? I’m speaking of your personal example, insightful thought provoking lyrics, music, vocals & art. Your lyrics/music/art, bring deep thoughts, contemplation, wonderful feelings of happiness, love, peace, hope, compassion & change. Do you feel it’s just flattery or do you truly believe, understand and/or accept that these are truths? I do realize you put your pants on one leg at a time, but they sure are pretty pants.

Hello Brandon! With a first solo album under your belt, how has the experience of writing and releasing 'Sons of the Sea' been different from that of the 'Wild Trapeze'? Were there major learnings from the first album that you integrated into this album? Thank you for being such an huge inspiration to us all! - Linda B.

When I’m feeling out of bounds (hahaha), I can watch you sing on mute, because you seem so calm, so balanced. So, my question is: How do you, daily, manage to keep yourself emotionally, mentally so balanced? Escause me if It’s too personal, I only ask because you are definately my biggest inspiration!

Hi Brandon, have you or any of the guys in INCUBUS collaborated or worked on any new material for the next INCUBUS album? If not, what do you anticipate the sound of the next album to be? - Jimmy Moon

Hi brandon, I love you and I am your biggest and number 1 fan. My question is, how would you compare your new solo record to wild trapeze? Are we going to hear a different sound or just the same? Love from the Philippines.

What inspired you to make another solo record? More power and I love you.

How has your previous music experience influenced your solo albums? I ask because the music you write seems to come from someone who has been flashed by a neuralizer from Men in Black and is just rediscovering their senses in vivid detail. That's a compliment by the way.

Brandon, Mr.Boyd, the Brandon Boyd. Im a long time fan of yours and Incubus in general. I would love to know how you overcome work obstacles like writers block? Also when you look back on your career, how did you overcome the inherit fear of 'is this the right thing?' Did you always know that performing was just what you wanted to do? What would you say is the biggest mistake inspiring artists do today?

Brandon, Your solo album coming out soon is an indy release. Can you talk about what it means to you to be an indy artist and what tools work best to supplement not being on a label? Also does that make it harder on you and Renman to put it out that way or does the freedom of doing what you want make it worth it? Thanks Chad Aroo.

I am very excited for the opportunity to ask Brandon a question as he has been a major musical influence for me for many years. My first question is, as a lyricist, if you experience writer's block, what methods have you used to overcome it? Also, what is your usual process for creating a vocal melody? Looking forward to hearing the new EP.

hello mr. boyd and mr. ren
I’m a long time fan from the Philippines, i’m so unlucky (and doomed) to have missed 3 of your concerts here so i’d like to ask you if you still have plans of doing another mighty gig in here even in the distant future? Thanks for the decades of good vibes and positivity.

    love and light,

    Greetings from Sardinia

    Andrea

    Hey Brandon,
over the past few years you’ve been playing a little more percussion instruments with incubus, even guitar on a few songs. Do you plan on expanding your music universe by adding some more instruments on your live shows?
Another question: Do you plan on touring with SOS?

    Cheers from Perú.
